Don’t Trust Just Anyone to Secure Your Hard-earned Credit

In their haste for peace of mind, many conscientious individuals put their trust in companies that bombard them with television, radio, and online advertisements. However, not researching the businesses are often unaware of their history and heedless practices.

Buyer Beware

In this heightened climate of Identity Theft and Identity Fraud, it is a wise choice for credit-active consumers to protect their valuable personal information.

Yet, in the wake of any adverse event that impacts a large portion of society, there are always unscrupulous individuals and companies that look for ways to profit on the affected or less informed.

Two Major Service Providers Have Created a Troubled, Deceptive Alliance

You can initiate a credit freeze on your Equifax report by visiting their website. However, we highly recommend that you don’t. Because the three major credit reporting agencies (CRA’s) are notorious for their deceptive practices.

For instance, when they present to consumers that disputing questionable items using their online dispute system as an easier way, unbeknownst to many doing so, they automatically void certain rights allowed to them under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

Likewise, concerning the described data breach, Equifax professing to help consumer’s added to their Terms of Service an ambiguous arbitration clause, which if a court finds that Equifax was negligent with their cybersecurity, people that enroll in its TrustedID Premier monitoring service would be banned from joining future class-action lawsuits.

Hence, being bound by the Terms of Service locks them out of potential benefits and forces enrollees to settle related complaints individually. This shameless statement of impunity goes against the very consumers and customers they should protect.

Thus, is why some attorneys have urged potential victims to avoid the site for this reason.

The consumer finance industry is rife with fraud, and from its inception in 2005 LifeLock has been embroiled in multiple class action lawsuits; stemming from deceptive advertising, and failing to adequately protect customers’ information.

In June 2007, Threat Level reported that LifeLock CEO Todd Davis had been the victim of identity theft, after someone used his identity to obtain a $500 loan from a check-cashing company. Davis discovered the crime only after the company called his wife’s cellphone to recover the unpaid debt. After his identity was hacked/ stolen 12 more times.

Moreover, in December 2015 LifeLock was ordered to pay $100 million to settle Federal Trade Commission contempt charges that it violated the terms of a 2010 federal court order that requires the company to secure consumers’ personal information and prohibits the company from deceptive advertising. This is the largest monetary award obtained by the Commission in an order enforcement action.

And, on September 21, 2016, U.S. District Judge Haywood Gilliam, Jr. granted final approval to a $68 million settlement for a LifeLock Identity Theif Fraud case.

Yet, even after being fined ridicilous sums of money, LifeLock is NOW offering to protect you from the Equifax breach, by SELLING you services provided by Equifax!
